The Moto G22 is a somewhat bulky smartphone, but it boasts a pleasant curvature and feels solidly constructed. Its thickness, measuring at 8.5 mm, is slightly heftier compared to the iPhone 13's 7.7 mm and the Galaxy S22's 7.6 mm. This discrepancy in dimensions is where some cost-cutting decisions appear to have been made.

As expected in this price range, the phone is constructed entirely of plastic, but it doesn't come across as cheap or fragile. It features a discreet Motorola logo on the back, along with a noticeable camera bump in the upper left corner, though it's not the most pronounced we've seen.
The Moto G22 offers a choice of two colors: Cosmic Black (the model we had) and the livelier Iceberg Blue. Both options exhibit a subtle shimmer effect when exposed to light, adding a touch of sophistication to an otherwise straightforward aesthetic.
While the Moto G22 lacks an official IP rating, Motorola claims it's "water-repellent," implying it can handle light rain splashes but shouldn't be fully submerged in a bathtub or pool.
The power and volume buttons are situated on the right side, while the USB-C port is at the bottom, and impressively, Motorola has retained a 3.5 mm headphone jack at the top. A fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button, and while an under-display sensor might be preferred, this one functions effectively.
In the budget smartphone segment, you won't encounter much in the way of groundbreaking design or refinement, but the Moto G22 isn't the type of phone that would make you want to conceal it due to its appearance.
